The bones of the body are supported by muscles and ligaments that surround each joint. When a muscle or ligament is injured or irritated, it can cause joint problems, pain and poor function.
Chiropractic adjustments are performed when a mis-alignment in the spine or extremities is detected.
Chiropractic aims to restore proper function in your joints in order to help heal the muscles, ligaments and other structures around them. While chiropractors often deal with back complaints, they also adjust all other joints in the body (ankles, elbows, wrists etc).
An adjustment is a gentle, specific force applied to a joint in a precise direction to separate restricted joint surfaces and correct a biomechanical problem. The doctor uses his/her hands to improve joint motion, decrease muscle spasm, and relieve pain.
While chiropractic care is safe in the vast majority of cases, some patients are simply not comfortable with spinal manipulation. If this is the case, there are other options for treatment. Gentler, joint mobilization is often performed to help decrease any stiffness and mis-alignment found. This involves a slow, oscillating force instead of a quick motion.
Active Release Techniques® is also an excellent alternative and/or conjunctive therapy to chiropractic manipuation.
